The eighth-generation Hyundai Sonata (DN8) marks a radical departure from its predecessors. Introduced in 2020, it adopts a bold "four-door coupe" design and sits on the new N3 platform. The most significant change in terms of reliability is the definitive abandonment of the Theta II family engines (infamous for their fire risks and premature failure) in favor of the new generation of Smartstream engines. The Hybrid (HEV) version, particularly targeted here, stands out for its remarkable efficiency, the integration of a solar panel roof (on certain trims), and the Active Shift Control (ASC) technology that optimizes the automatic gearbox's shifts. In 2024, the model received a major facelift introducing the Seamless Horizon Lamp light signature and the addition of an all-wheel drive (AWD)
The eighth-generation Hyundai Sonata (DN8) is an extremely accomplished sedan that erases the heavy engine reliability problems (Theta II) of its predecessors. The Hybrid engine (2.0 HEV) is the most relevant choice: it is frugal, very reliable, and benefits from mature engineering. The naturally aspirated versions (2.5 GDI) are also excellent choices for their simplicity. The only reservation concerns the sporty N Line version (2.5 T-GDI), whose DCT-8 gearbox had a chaotic start. Although the car has undergone several peripheral recalls (fuel tank, oil pump, windshield), the main mechanical components (Smartstream engines) are robust. It is a highly recommended purchase, provided you verify that all manufacturer recalls have been performed.
