Hyundai Sonata VII (LF) (2015 – 2019)

Reliability score : 6.8/10

The seventh-generation Hyundai Sonata (codename LF) was introduced to succeed the very bold YF generation. It adopts a more conservative and mature design (Fluidic Sculpture 2.0), while significantly improving chassis rigidity, soundproofing, and interior finish quality. A facelift occurred in 2017 (2018 model year), bringing a more aggressive front fascia and new driver assistance technologies. Although highly appreciated for its roominess, comfort, and price-to-equipment ratio, the reputation of this generation is heavily tarnished by the catastrophic failures of the Theta II gasoline engines (2.4 GDI and 2.0 T-GDI), which led to massive recalls, fire risks, and warranty extensions (especially in North America). The hybrid versions and the small 1.6 T-GDI engine fare much better.

🎯 Verdict

The Hyundai Sonata (LF) is a family sedan full of qualities: spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped. However, purchasing a version equipped with the 2.4 GDI or 2.0 T-GDI (Theta II) engine is strongly discouraged due to proven risks of engine failure and fire, unless the engine has been recently replaced by Hyundai and covered by a lifetime warranty. On the other hand, the 1.6 T-GDI (Eco) versions and especially the Hybrid variants (HEV/PHEV) are excellent choices, offering significantly higher reliability and reduced running costs. Favor the facelifted models (2018-2019) which corrected most of the early-life defects and electronic recalls of the 2015-2016 years.
