The sixth-generation Hyundai Sonata (codename YF) marked a major turning point for the brand thanks to its bold "Fluidic Sculpture" design and generous equipment. Designed primarily for the North American and Asian markets (Europe having received the i40), it enjoyed immense commercial success at launch. However, this generation is infamous for inaugurating the 4-cylinder engines of the Theta II GDI family, struck by one of the biggest reliability scandals in modern automotive history (premature wear of connecting rod bearings, engine failures, fire risks). Despite its intrinsic qualities of comfort and roominess, its mechanical reliability record is heavily tainted.
