The first-generation Hyundai Kona (OS) is an urban SUV (B-segment) with a bold design that marked a stylistic break for the Korean brand. Launched in late 2017, it stands out with an exceptionally wide range of powertrains, covering gasoline, diesel, hybrid (HEV), and 100% electric (EV). A facelift occurred in late 2020 (MY2021), bringing a smoothed front end, the introduction of 48V mild-hybridization on some engines, a technological update (larger screens), and the arrival of the sporty N-Line trim, followed by the radical Kona N version. Overall, the Kona OS is a reliable vehicle, supported by the 5-year unlimited mileage manufacturer's warranty, although some transmissions (DCT7) and the first generation of EV batteries experienced issues.
The first-generation Hyundai Kona is an excellent used car choice, provided you carefully select its engine. For gasoline, the 1.0 T-GDI is the most rational and reliable choice for daily use. The Hybrid (HEV) version is the most recommendable of the entire range for its reliability/consumption compromise. The 1.6 T-GDI offers good performance, but its DCT7 gearbox requires a thorough test drive before purchase. Finally, for the North American market, the 2.0 MPI should be avoided if the manufacturer's recall has not been performed.
