Hyundai i40 I facelift (VF) (2014 – 2019)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The Hyundai i40 (VF generation), in its facelifted version introduced in late 2014 (2015 model year), is a D-segment family car designed specifically for the European market. Available as a sedan and especially as an estate (CrossWagon / CW) which accounts for the majority of sales, it stands out for its generous interior space, rich equipment, and its 5-year unlimited mileage manufacturer warranty (which covered most models until recently). The facelift brought a modernized front end (hexagonal grille), new lights, reworked suspension for better handling, and above all the introduction of the DCT-7 dual-clutch gearbox coupled with the 1.7 CRDi diesel engine boosted to 141 hp. At the end of its career (2018), the 1.7 CRDi was replaced by the new 1.6 CRDi (Smartstream) to meet the Euro 6d-T

🎯 Verdict

The facelifted Hyundai i40 is an extremely rational used car choice, particularly in the estate (CW) body style with the 1.7 CRDi engine. While the diesel block itself is very robust (reliable timing chain, no major flaws), it is imperative to favor examples that have been driven on the highway to avoid DPF/EGR issues. The manual gearbox is the choice for absolute peace of mind. The DCT-7 dual-clutch gearbox brings real driving comfort but requires a rigorous test drive before purchase to ensure the clutches do not judder. Faced with sometimes temperamental European competitors, the i40 offers appreciable peace of mind at a very competitive price.
