The third generation of the Hyundai i20 (code BC3 for the global/European market, BI3 for India) marks a stylistic break with the 'Sensuous Sportiness' design and an impressive technological upgrade (10.25" screens, advanced driver assistance systems). Expert Note on Diesel: It is crucial to emphasize that Hyundai has completely abandoned diesel engines for the i20 in Europe with this BC3 generation, favoring petrol and mild-hybrid (MHEV 48V) powertrains. However, diesel did not disappear globally at launch: the Indian market (and some emerging markets) benefited from the robust 1.5 U2 CRDi 100 hp engine. This engine was, however, withdrawn from the catalog in early 2023 following the entry into force of BS6 Phase 2 (RDE) emission standards, making its compliance too costly for the segment
The third-generation Hyundai i20 is a versatile, technological, and very well-designed city car. Regarding the 1.5 CRDi diesel engine (markets outside Europe): it's an excellent choice for high-mileage drivers. This U2 engine is torquey, extremely frugal, and generally very reliable if, and only if, it is used on roads and highways. Buying used is highly recommended for this use, but it should absolutely be avoided if your daily routine consists of short urban trips (the DPF will not tolerate it). For European buyers (where diesel is absent): the 1.2 MPI is the sensible choice for absolute reliability in the city, while the 1.0 T-GDI 100 hp (ideally with a manual gearbox to avoid DCT7 issues) offers the best compromise for mixed use.
