Hyundai i20 II (GB) (2014 – 2020)

Reliability score : 8.4/10

The second-generation Hyundai i20 (code name GB, or 'Elite i20' in some emerging markets) marked a real turning point for the Korean manufacturer in the B-segment. Designed at the European R&D center in Rüsselsheim, it stands out for its record-breaking interior space for the category, a serious finish, and very healthy, albeit slightly firm, road handling. The mid-2018 facelift modernized the front end (cascading grille), updated the infotainment system, and, most importantly, rationalized the mechanical offering: discontinuation of diesel engines in Europe, introduction of an excellent DCT-7 dual-clutch gearbox replacing the obsolete 4-speed automatic, and addition of a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) on turbo petrol engines. Benefiting from the manufacturer's 5-year unlimited mileage

🎯 Verdict

The Hyundai i20 (GB) is an extremely rational and reassuring used car choice. Without being the most fun to drive or the most technological of its generation, it compensates with mechanical reliability far superior to the European average (especially compared to PureTech or TCE engines of the same era). Our advice: For urban and suburban use, the 1.2 MPI 84 hp is indestructible and very economical to maintain. For more versatility, the 1.0 T-GDI 100 hp (ideally post-2018 with the DCT-7 gearbox) offers an excellent compromise. Diesel versions should be avoided unless you drive more than 20,000 km per year on highways.
