Hyundai i20 I (PB) (2008 – 2014)

Reliability score : 8.5/10

The first-generation Hyundai i20 (codename PB) was launched in late 2008 to replace the aging Getz. Designed at Hyundai's European R&D center in Rüsselsheim (Germany), it was specifically conceived to meet Old Continent standards in terms of road handling, interior space, and safety (5 Euro NCAP stars). It stands out for its excellent price/equipment ratio and a 5-year manufacturer's warranty, which greatly contributed to its success. In 2012, it received a facelift (Phase 2) adopting the brand's Fluidic Sculpture design language, improving the perceived quality of interior plastics and introducing new engines (including the 1.1 CRDi and an evolution of the 1.2 gasoline engine with 85 hp). It is a rational versatile city car, particularly renowned for the robustness of its gasoline engines

🎯 Verdict

The Hyundai i20 (PB) is an excellent used car choice if you opt for a gasoline engine, especially the 1.2 (78 or 85 hp). It's a trouble-free city car, economical to use, and spared from major mechanical issues thanks to its chain timing. Diesel versions (CRDi) should be avoided unless you are certain to make regular long journeys, as they suffer from classic urban fouling problems. When purchasing, it is imperative to check for any knocking in the steering (EPS flex disc) and proper clutch operation.
