Honda Pilot II (YF1) (2009 – 2015)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The second-generation Honda Pilot (code YF1) is a midsize family SUV designed primarily for the North American market. Characterized by its very cubic and utilitarian design, it stands out for its ability to accommodate up to 8 passengers with generous interior space. It received a facelift in 2012, bringing a new grille, interior improvements, and slight aerodynamic and mechanical optimizations to reduce fuel consumption. Although it is not a true off-roader, its optional VTM-4 all-wheel drive (AWD) system is renowned for being very robust when tackling snow and dirt roads. It was never officially marketed in Western Europe, only being found through isolated imports.

🎯 Verdict

The second-generation Honda Pilot (2009-2015) is an excellent choice for large families looking for a spacious, practical, and overall very reliable vehicle. Data from ADAC and TÜV Report (via J.D. Power) confirm its above-average robustness. However, the buyer must be fully aware of this model's Achilles heel: the cylinder deactivation system (VCM) of the J35Z4 V6 engine. This system can cause excessive oil consumption and foul the spark plugs. Purchase is recommended, provided the maintenance history is scrupulously checked (especially the timing belt) and the oil level is monitored. The installation of a VCM deactivation device by the previous owner is a huge plus that permanently makes this engine reliable.
