GMC Sierra 1500 3rd gen (K2XX) (2014 – 2018)

Reliability score : 7.4/10

The 3rd generation GMC Sierra 1500 (K2XX) is the technical and luxurious twin of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Positioned in the full-size pickup segment, it stands out with a more prestigious design and high-end finishes, notably the highly sought-after Denali version which achieves the best customer satisfaction scores according to J.D. Power. Although its design is based on a robust ladder frame, this generation introduced EcoTec3 engines with direct injection and cylinder deactivation (AFM). While the 6.2L V8 shines with its reliability, the widespread 5.3L V8 suffers from documented problems with its hydraulic lifters. Overall reliability is average for the segment.

🎯 Verdict

The GMC Sierra 1500 (2014-2018) is a prestigious and highly capable pickup, but it requires careful selection of its engine. The 6.2L V8 is by far the best choice: it is extremely reliable and offers top-tier performance, provided you ensure the 8-speed automatic gearbox has been properly maintained (oil change with the new GM oil). On the other hand, the highly popular 5.3L V8 requires caution due to the chronic fragility of its AFM lifters. Regardless of the model, it is imperative to verify that the numerous safety recalls (brakes, steering, airbags) have been performed.
