The Genesis GV70 (Generation I - JK1) is a luxury compact SUV that directly challenges the German trio (BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, Audi Q5). Based on the Hyundai-Kia group's M3 rear-wheel-drive platform (shared with the G70 and G80), it stands out with an audacious design ('Athletic Elegance'), top-flight interior finish, and an aggressive price-to-equipment ratio. Although the brand is still building its image in Europe, the GV70 quickly won over North America and South Korea. In terms of reliability, it benefits from the maturity of the Smartstream engines, although major recall campaigns (notably on the fuel system) marked its early production years. A 100% electric version (Electrified GV70) completes the lineup with a highly efficient 800V architecture.
The Genesis GV70 is a formidable and refreshing alternative to traditional premium SUVs. Its luxurious cabin and plush comfort make it an excellent travel vehicle. In terms of reliability, the Smartstream engine blocks are inherently robust, but the model has been marred by serious peripheral issues (failing fuel pumps, leaks, wiring harnesses). Buying used is recommended, on the sine qua non condition that the maintenance history is crystal clear and that all manufacturer recalls have been performed. The 2.5T engine represents the best compromise, while the Electrified version is brilliant but requires verifying the condition of the ICCU.
