The facelifted first-generation Genesis G70 (codename IK facelift) was introduced in 2021 to adopt the brand's new visual identity, dubbed "Athletic Elegance" (split headlights and taillights, crest grille). Positioned in the highly competitive premium mid-size sedan segment (D-segment), it directly targets the German benchmarks (BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4). Although Genesis is a brand focused on gasoline and electrification, the G70 retained a 2.2 CRDi (Smartstream) diesel engine in certain markets (South Korea, Europe, Australia) to meet the needs of high-mileage drivers. This block, shared with other Hyundai/Kia group models, offers excellent torque and controlled fuel consumption, although it slightly lacks the acoustic refinement of a Bavarian 4-cylinder diesel. The facelifted Genesis G70 is an excellent exotic alternative to traditional premium sedans. If you opt for the 2.2 CRDi diesel engine, you will be making the sensible choice: it is a proven, torquey, and very reliable engine provided it is confined to its preferred domain (the highway and long trips) to preserve its DPF and EGR valve. The gasoline versions offer more driving pleasure but are penalized by high fuel consumption (especially the V6). Caution however: the G70 has been the subject of major recalls (ABS module with fire risk, fuel pump, turbo hoses on the V6). It is absolutely crucial to verify that these campaigns have been carried out at a dealership before purchasing. If the history is clear, it is a highly recommendable purchase for those who do not need large rear seats.
