Genesis G70 I (IK) (2018 – 2021)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The first-generation Genesis G70 (IK code) is a compact premium sedan designed to compete directly with the German benchmarks (BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4). Based on a rear-wheel drive (or AWD) platform shared with the Kia Stinger, it stands out for its refined dynamic handling, luxurious finish, and excellent price-to-equipment ratio. Although the North American market favored gasoline engines (2.0T and V6 3.3T), the G70 was offered in certain markets (South Korea, Australia, Europe during its late introduction) with a 2.2 CRDi diesel engine. This block, well known within the Hyundai-Kia group, offers a torquey and economical alternative for high-mileage drivers, while benefiting from the proven reliability of the brand's R engines.

🎯 Verdict

The Genesis G70 (2018-2021) is an excellent alternative to established premium sedans. While the gasoline versions have undergone several major recalls (fuel pump, turbo on the V6, ABS module), the 2.2 CRDi diesel version proves to be an extremely pragmatic and reliable choice. This D4HB engine is one of the most solid diesel blocks in the Korean group. For a buyer covering long distances, a used G70 2.2 CRDi is a fantastic bargain: it offers the luxury and dynamism of a premium RWD with the reliability of a proven engine. However, it is imperative to verify that the electronic recalls (notably the ABS module and starter) have been performed at a dealership.
