The Ford Mustang Mach-E (Generation I) marks a historic turning point for the American manufacturer: it is its first 100% electric SUV designed specifically as such. By taking the name and certain styling cues of the legendary 'pony car', Ford made a bold bet. Positioned against the Tesla Model Y, it stands out with a strong design, dynamic road handling (RWD-biased even in AWD) and a spacious cabin dominated by a huge vertical touchscreen (Sync 4A). While the dynamic qualities and driving pleasure are present, the early years of production were marred by early software issues (12V battery drain) and, above all, by a critical hardware weakness in the high-voltage battery contactors (HVBJB). The 2023 models benefit from numerous hardware and software (OTA) corrections.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an endearing electric SUV, endowed with a real stylistic and dynamic personality. However, buying a used model from the 2020 to early 2022 model years requires extreme vigilance. The design flaw of the high voltage contactors (HVBJB) is a sword of Damocles that can immobilize the vehicle. Only buy a model from those years if you have formal proof that the high voltage junction box has been physically replaced with the new reinforced part by Ford. Models produced from late 2022 / 2023 are much more reliable, as the early defects (software, glass mountings, 12V battery) have been corrected at the factory. Favor an Extended Range RWD version for the best range/price compromise.
