The 7th generation Ford Mustang (codename S650) succeeds the highly popular S550. Although it is based on an evolution of the previous platform, it marks a technological breakthrough with a completely redesigned interior centered around a digital panel (Sync 4). Mechanically, it remains one of the last representatives of traditional 'Pony Cars', retaining 100% internal combustion engines. The Coyote V8 moves to its 4th generation (dual intake), while the 4-cylinder EcoBoost is heavily revised. The range is topped by the new 'Dark Horse' version, oriented for the track. While the mechanical fundamentals are proven, the early production years of this S650 are marked by numerous recalls related to electronics and assembly.
The Ford Mustang S650 blows hot and cold. Mechanically, it relies on the excellent Coyote V8, whose reliability has been widely demonstrated since the previous generation. However, its launch was marred by an astronomical amount of recalls affecting electronics, assembly, and safety (fire risks, loss of control, black screens). Buying advice: If you are targeting a used 2024 model, demand a clear history proving that all manufacturer recalls have been applied. It is highly advisable to favor models produced in late 2024 or 2025, once the 'teething issues' have been corrected at the factory. The Dark Horse version with its Tremec gearbox represents the best choice for manual transmission reliability.
