Ford Kuga III (C519) (2019 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.4/10

The third-generation Ford Kuga (codename C519) marks a major turning point for the compact SUV from the Blue Oval brand. Based on the global C2 platform (shared with the Focus Mk4), it is lighter, longer, and adopts a more dynamic design, closer to a raised wagon. Its main asset lies in its massive electrification offering, quickly becoming the best-selling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicle in Europe. A mid-cycle refresh (facelift) was introduced in early 2024, bringing a redesigned front end, the removal of many physical buttons in favor of the SYNC 4 infotainment system (13.2-inch screen), and a slight optimization of the hybrid powertrains. Overall, the Kuga III is a very accomplished vehicle, offering an excellent compromise between driving dynamics, passenger space, and energy efficiency,

🎯 Verdict

The Ford Kuga III is an extremely relevant choice on the used car market, provided you target the hybrid powertrains (2.5 FHEV or PHEV). The 2.5L engine combined with the eCVT transmission (technology very similar to Toyota's HSD) offers high-level mechanical reliability, controlled consumption, and undeniable driving pleasure. You just need to ensure that 2020 PHEV models have undergone the HV battery recall. On the other hand, diesel powertrains (EcoBlue) are to be avoided except for very high-mileage highway drivers, due to capricious emissions control systems. The 1.5 EcoBoost petrol is a decent choice for small budgets, but does not offer the driving pleasure or fuel economy of the hybrid versions.
