Ford Kuga II (C394) (2012 – 2019)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The Ford Kuga Mk2 (internal code C394), also sold as the Ford Escape (Mk3) in North America, is a compact crossover SUV built on the Global C platform. It represents a significant leap in refinement, space, and technology over the first generation. Known for its sharp driving dynamics, precise steering, and comfortable ride, it stands out as one of the best-handling SUVs in its class. A major facelift was introduced in late 2016 (Model Year 2017), bringing a bolder front fascia, improved interior ergonomics, and the much-superior SYNC 3 infotainment system (replacing the sluggish SYNC 2). 🎯 Verdict

The Ford Kuga Mk2 is a tale of two halves. If you buy a 2.0 TDCi diesel (Europe/Global) or a 2.5L Duratec naturally aspirated petrol (North America), you are getting a fantastic, reliable, and great-handling SUV. However, the EcoBoost petrol engines (1.5L, 1.6L, and later 2.0L) are plagued by severe design flaws involving coolant intrusion and overheating, which can lead to complete engine failure. Buying Advice: Seek out a post-2016 facelift model for the much-improved SYNC 3 system and better interior. If you drive long distances, the 2.0 TDCi is highly recommended (ensure the PowerShift gearbox has been serviced). If you must buy an EcoBoost, demand documented proof that the engine block has been replaced with the updated design. Otherwise, avoid the 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost entirely.
