Ford Escape III (C520) (2013 – 2019)

Reliability score : 5.2/10

The third-generation Ford Escape (codename C520), sold as the Ford Kuga in Europe, marks the model's transition to a global platform (C1, shared with the Focus). It abandons the boxy styling of its predecessors for a more dynamic and aerodynamic design. While its road manners and driving pleasure are undeniable, this generation has been marred by very numerous reliability problems, particularly on its 1.6L and 1.5L EcoBoost engines, as well as a very temperamental infotainment system (MyFord Touch / SYNC 2) prior to 2016. A major facelift occurred in 2017, bringing the SYNC 3 system and replacing the problematic 1.6L with a 1.5L (which unfortunately experienced its own issues). According to Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, and the ADAC, the overall reliability of this generation is well below

🎯 Verdict

The 3rd generation Ford Escape (2013-2019) is a compact SUV that is pleasant to drive but whose reliability is overall poor, dragged down by poorly designed small-displacement EcoBoost engines. You must absolutely avoid the 1.6L EcoBoost (fire risks) and be extremely wary of the 1.5L EcoBoost (coolant intrusion). If you wish to buy this model, look exclusively for the naturally aspirated 2.5L version (very reliable but basic) or, failing that, the 2.0L EcoBoost (more solid but thirsty), ensuring that the automatic gearbox fluid has been changed and that all recalls (especially the gearbox linkage and door latches) have been performed. Favor 2016 and newer models to benefit from the SYNC 3 system.
