The "second generation" Ford EcoSport (often referred to as Phase 2 or Gen 2 in Europe) corresponds to the major facelift of the B515 model initially launched in 2012. Produced in Craiova (Romania) for the European market from 2017, it corrects the main flaws of the first version: the interior finish takes a leap forward (dashboard borrowed from the Fiesta Mk8), soundproofing is improved, and the backpack-style spare wheel becomes optional. Mechanically, the abandonment of the disastrous PowerShift dual-clutch gearbox in favor of a torque converter automatic gearbox (6F15) is excellent news. The introduction of the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel engine also makes it possible to offer an all-wheel drive system (Intelligent AWD), which is rare in this segment. The facelifted Ford EcoSport (2017-2022) is a paradoxical vehicle. If you are looking for a small diesel SUV, it is a very relevant choice: the 1.5 TDCi and 1.5 EcoBlue engines are robust, torquey, and the AWD version is a rarity in this segment. On the other hand, if you are aiming for a petrol version, caution is advised: the 1.0 EcoBoost suffers from the same issue as PSA's 1.2 PureTech (fragile wet belt). The abandonment of the PowerShift gearbox on this generation is a huge relief for reliability. Buy in diesel for high mileage drivers or in the mountains (AWD), avoid in 1.0 EcoBoost petrol without an impeccable maintenance history.
