Dacia Sandero II (2012 – 2020)

Reliability score : 8.4/10

The Dacia Sandero II (sold as the Renault Sandero in Latin America, Russia, and South Africa) is a quintessential budget subcompact hatchback. Built on the proven B0/M0 platform shared with the Renault Clio II/III, it offers unbeatable value for money, a spacious interior, and low running costs. The model received a significant facelift in late 2016 (Phase 2), introducing updated styling, LED daytime running lights, and new powertrains (notably the 1.0 SCe replacing the old 1.2 16v). While it lacks the refinement, soundproofing, and advanced safety features of its more expensive rivals, its mechanical simplicity makes it highly reliable and cheap to maintain. The Stepway version, with its raised ground clearance and crossover styling, accounted for a massive portion of its sales.

🎯 Verdict

The Dacia Sandero II is a highly rational purchase. It does not pretend to be a luxury vehicle; it is an honest, utilitarian, A-to-B car. For petrol buyers, the 0.9 TCe (90 hp) is the sweet spot, offering a great balance of reliability, adequate performance, and low running costs (especially in its factory LPG variant). The older 1.2 16v is bulletproof but sluggish, while the newer 1.0 SCe should be approached with caution due to potential oil consumption issues. Avoid high-mileage diesels if your commute is strictly urban. Overall, it is an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers, provided you accept its lack of refinement.
