CUPRA Ateca I (2018 – 2025)
Reliability score : 8.4/10
The CUPRA Ateca is the very first model launched by the CUPRA brand after its independence from SEAT in 2018. Based on the SEAT Ateca, it is positioned as a high-performance sporty compact SUV. Initially offered with a single 300 hp 2.0 TSI engine coupled with 4Drive AWD and the DSG7 gearbox, it received a facelift in 2020 (new lighting signature, MIB3 infotainment system, steering wheel with satellite buttons). In 2023, to broaden its customer base towards the end of its career, the range was expanded with more modest engines (150 hp 1.5 TSI and 190 hp 2.0 TSI). It is a dynamically highly accomplished vehicle, offering an excellent compromise between radical sportiness and everyday family use.
✅ Strengths
- Exceptional performance and dynamic handling (300 hp version)
- Remarkable versatility (roominess of a family SUV, 485 L trunk)
- Standard DCC adaptive chassis control very well calibrated
- Unbeatable price/performance/equipment ratio at its launch
- Very reassuring overall mechanical reliability (proven EA888 Gen3 engine)
⚠️ Weaknesses
- High fuel consumption in sporty driving (300 hp version)
- Recurring electronic bugs on the multimedia system (especially 2020-2022 models)
- Slightly basic interior plastics before the facelift (SEAT heritage)
- Maintenance cost of the optional Brembo brakes (two-piece rotors are very expensive)
- Original exhaust sound somewhat muffled by the DPF/FAP (OPF) since 2019
🎯 Verdict
The CUPRA Ateca is an excellent choice for fathers and mothers looking for a vehicle capable of handling daily commutes while offering sports car performance on the weekend. The 300 hp 2.0 TSI engine is the heart of this model: it is extremely robust (the oil consumption problems of the older EA888 generations are history) and highly performant. The purchase is highly recommended, provided you find an example where the transmission maintenance (DSG and Haldex) has been scrupulously respected. The 150 and 190 hp versions, although rational, lose the radical DNA that makes the charm of this model.
