Citroën C5 Aircross I (2018–2021) (2018 – 2021)

Reliability score : 5.5/10

The first-generation Citroën C5 Aircross (phase 1, 2018-2021) is a compact family SUV based on the EMP2 platform of the PSA group (now Stellantis). Positioned as the ultra-comfortable alternative to the Peugeot 3008, it stands out with its suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions (Advanced Comfort) and its three independent, sliding, and retractable rear seats, giving it the modularity of a minivan. While its family features and comfort are praised by critics, its career is marred by recurring reliability problems with the group's engines (led by the 1.2 PureTech and 1.5 BlueHDi), requiring great vigilance when buying used. Overall design rating: 7/10 (Excellent family concept, penalized by mechanical reliability).

🎯 Verdict

The Citroën C5 Aircross is an excellent family vehicle on paper, offering unmatched comfort in its category and very practical modularity. However, buying a used version from the 2018-2021 period requires extreme caution. The 1.2 PureTech petrol engine is to be avoided unless the engine or timing belt has been replaced very recently with the new specifications, and the maintenance is impeccable. The 1.5 BlueHDi also suffers from serious flaws (7mm chain, AdBlue). Buying advice: Favor the 1.6 PureTech 180 in petrol, which offers a much better reliability record and superior drivability, or the 2.0 BlueHDi 180 for high mileage drivers (keeping a budget aside for the AdBlue system). Negotiate prices firmly given the tarnished reputation of these engines.
