The first-generation Citroën C5 Aircross (phase 1, 2018-2021) is a family compact SUV based on the PSA Group's (now Stellantis) EMP2 platform. Positioned as the ultra-comfortable alternative to the Peugeot 3008, it stands out with its Advanced Comfort hydraulic progressive cushions suspensions and its three independent, sliding, and retractable rear seats, giving it MPV-like modularity. While its family features and comfort are praised by critics, its career is marred by recurring reliability problems with the group's engines (1.2 PureTech and 1.5 BlueHDi in particular), requiring great vigilance when buying a used model. Overall design score: 7/10 (Excellent family concept, penalized by mechanical reliability).
The Citroën C5 Aircross is an excellent family vehicle on paper, offering unparalleled comfort in its category and very practical modularity. However, purchasing a used version from the 2018-2021 period requires extreme caution. The 1.2 PureTech petrol engine is to be avoided unless the engine or timing belt has been replaced very recently with the new specifications, and maintenance is impeccable. The 1.5 BlueHDi also suffers from serious flaws (7mm chain, AdBlue). Buying advice: Prioritize the 1.6 PureTech 180 for petrol, which offers much better reliability and superior driving pleasure, or the 2.0 BlueHDi 180 for high-mileage drivers (keeping a budget aside for the AdBlue system). Negotiate prices firmly given the tarnished reputation of these engines.
