The second-generation Citroën C1 (project PA/PB) is a segment A mini-city car, co-developed with Peugeot (108) and Toyota (Aygo II) at the TPCA factory in Kolín, Czech Republic. Replacing the successful first generation, it stands out with a more assertive design, modernized equipment (touchscreen, reversing camera), and a convertible version with a canvas roof called 'Airscape'. Mechanically, it offers a striking duality: a 1.0-liter engine of Toyota origin (reputed to be indestructible) and a 1.2-liter engine of PSA origin (subject to serious design problems). Production ceased in 2022 without a direct replacement, as Citroën reoriented its strategy towards electric vehicles (Ami, ë-C3).
The second-generation Citroën C1 is an excellent city car, on the strict condition of choosing the 1.0 VTi engine (68 or 72 hp). Thanks to its Toyota DNA, this engine offers rare peace of mind in the used car market, coupled with negligible maintenance costs. In contrast, the 1.2 PureTech 82 hp engine, although more powerful, is to be avoided due to its chronic problems with the submerged timing belt, which turn an economical car into a financial black hole. Prioritize a 1.0 VTi version with a manual gearbox and a clear service history, and you will get one of the most reliable cars in its category.
