The second-generation Chevrolet Trax (2024+) marks a complete break from its predecessor. Longer, lower, and wider, it abandons the chubby small urban SUV look for a dynamic crossover profile with coupe-like styling. Based on the VSS-F platform (shared with the Buick Envista), it is only offered in FWD and with a single 1.2-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine. Its major asset lies in its price/roominess/equipment ratio, positioning it as one of the most affordable new vehicles on the North American market. Early reliability surveys (J.D. Power 2024) place it above the average for its category, offering a much better initial track record than the first generation.
The second-generation Chevrolet Trax is an excellent surprise. By abandoning the cramped architecture of the first generation to become a spacious and affordable crossover, it hits hard. Initial data from J.D. Power and Consumer Reports place it above average in terms of reliability. However, as an expert, the presence of the 1.2T (LIH) engine with a wet timing belt imposes a reservation for the very long term: this vehicle is a BUY, but requires a rigorous owner who will not neglect any oil change and will use the exact oil recommended by the manufacturer. At this price, it is one of the best deals on the current North American market.
