The 5th generation Chevrolet Tahoe (codename T1XX) marks a major evolution for the large American SUV. Based on the GMT T1XX platform shared with the Silverado, it abandons the solid rear axle in favor of an independent rear suspension (IRS), radically transforming ride comfort and third-row space. Although it offers exceptional family and towing capabilities, its debut was marred by teething problems (electronics, transmission, and cylinder management on the 5.3L). Models produced from 2023 onwards show a marked improvement in reliability. It is positioned as a status-symbol behemoth, very expensive to maintain outside of North America.
The 5th generation Chevrolet Tahoe is an exceptional family SUV in terms of space and capabilities, but its reliability record is tarnished by a difficult debut. The 2021 and 2022 models should be approached with extreme caution due to numerous electronic bugs and the risk of lifter failure on the 5.3L V8. It is highly recommended to target a model from 2023 onwards, preferably equipped with the 6.2L V8 (more robust) or the 3.0L Diesel, and to ensure that the massive list of manufacturer recalls has been scrupulously addressed by the GM network.
