Chevrolet Silverado 1500 3rd gen (K2XX) (2014 – 2018)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The 3rd generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (code name K2XX) marks a major evolution for General Motors' full-size pickup. Launched for the 2014 model year, it introduces the EcoTec3 engine family (direct injection, variable valve timing, and AFM cylinder deactivation on all blocks). It stands out with a significantly quieter and more refined cabin than the previous generation, as well as a reinforced ladder frame. A facelift occurred in 2016, bringing a new front fascia with LED lighting and expanding the availability of the 8-speed automatic gearbox. Although very robust overall, its reliability rating is tarnished by recurring problems related to the cylinder deactivation system on the highly popular 5.3L V8.

🎯 Verdict

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2014-2018) is a fundamentally solid pickup, but its reliability depends drastically on the chosen configuration. The 6.2L V8 coupled with rigorous maintenance is an excellent choice, offering power and durability. On the other hand, the highly popular 5.3L V8 requires great caution on the used market due to the documented fragility of its AFM (Active Fuel Management) lifters. If you opt for a 5.3L, favor a model whose AFM system has been preventively deactivated or whose lifters have already been replaced. Models equipped with the 6-speed gearbox are generally less temperamental than those fitted with the first iterations of the 8-speed gearbox.
