The 8th generation Chevrolet Malibu (Gen VIII) is a mid-size sedan based on General Motors' global Epsilon II platform. Designed to be a global car, it was marketed in nearly 100 countries. Although it offers a very quiet cabin, a smooth ride, and an intuitive myLink infotainment system, it suffered at launch from below-average rear legroom for the category, which prompted Chevrolet to do an emergency facelift as early as 2014. Quickly replaced in 2016 by the Gen IX, it represents an affordable alternative on the used market today against the untouchable Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, although its long-term reliability is rated "Average" by J.D. Power and Consumer Reports.
The 8th generation Chevrolet Malibu is a comfortable, quiet sedan equipped with excellent petrol engines (notably the very reliable 2.0T LTG). However, it is penalized by disappointing rear roominess and a particularly heavy recall history (suspension, electronics, airbags). Compared to a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord, its long-term reliability is inferior. It is a vehicle to NEGOTIATE: it suffers from strong depreciation which makes it a good deal on the used market, provided you opt for a post-2014 model (facelifted), absolutely avoid the eAssist version, and scrupulously check that all safety recalls (especially the rear suspension) have been performed.
