The 3rd generation Chevrolet Colorado (codename GMT595) marks a major technological and mechanical departure from the previous generation. Launched for the 2023 model year, it abandons V6 and diesel engines to streamline its offering around a single 2.7L turbocharged 4-cylinder block, shared with its big brother, the Silverado. This model moves significantly upmarket with a modernized interior, generous standard technological equipment (digital screens), and a strong focus on off-road capabilities with the introduction of the Trail Boss trim and the retention of the extreme ZR2. Although the engine is already proven at GM, this new platform has experienced some teething problems (electronics and assembly) typical of early production years.
The 3rd generation Chevrolet Colorado is a highly accomplished mid-size pickup dynamically and mechanically. GM's choice to bet everything on the 2.7L Turbo 4-cylinder proves successful: the engine (especially in the TurboMax version) offers superior drivability and torque compared to the old V6s, while being mechanically robust (already proven on the Silverado). However, the initial reliability of this new generation is marred by factory assembly issues (wheel bolts, seatbelts, fuel pump) and software bugs (phantom braking). If you are targeting a 2023 or 2024 model, it is imperative to verify that all recalls have been performed. The 2025 models should benefit from better production maturity.
