BMW Z4 III (G29) (2018 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.8/10

The third-generation BMW Z4 (G29) marks a return to its roots for the Bavarian roadster. Developed jointly with Toyota (which used this base for the Supra A90), it abandons the heavy retractable hardtop of the previous generation (E89) in favor of a classic canvas soft top, which is lighter and faster to operate. Based on the CLAR modular platform, it offers an ideal 50/50 weight distribution, widened tracks, and a shortened wheelbase for maximum agility. In terms of reliability, this generation is an excellent vintage: it is exclusively powered by the "B" series modular blocks (B48 in 4-cylinder, B58 in 6-cylinder), renowned for their robustness and having corrected the major flaws of older generations (N20/N54/N55).

🎯 Verdict

The BMW Z4 G29 is an excellent buy. Unlike many European roadsters that have suffered from temperamental engines over the last decade, the Z4 relies on BMW's B48/B58 engine generation, which is today considered one of the most reliable in the premium market. The choice of engine will depend on your budget: the sDrive20i is more than sufficient for cruising, but the M40i (B58) transforms the car into a true sports machine with bulletproof reliability. Just make sure that the recalls (especially on the steering and starter) have been carried out and favor a model with a rigorous maintenance history.
