BMW X7 I (G07) (2018 – 2022)

Reliability score : 7.4/10

The first-generation BMW X7 (G07) (phase 1, before the late 2022 facelift) is the Bavarian brand's first true luxury 7-seater SUV. Designed to compete with the Mercedes GLS and primarily targeting the North American and Asian markets, it is based on the CLAR modular platform. As the flagship of the X range, it stands out for its exceptional ride comfort (standard air suspension), top-flight soundproofing, and flawless finish. While the six-cylinder engines (petrol and diesel) shine with their drivability and overall reliability, the model has suffered from numerous teething problems related to its electronic complexity and safety equipment, as evidenced by the long list of official recalls.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X7 (G07) is a formidable travel machine, offering luxury and space comparable to a 7 Series, with the versatility of an SUV. On a strictly mechanical level, the six-cylinder engines (notably the 30d diesel and 40i petrol) are of exemplary reliability. However, the astronomical amount of safety-related recalls (brakes, steering, fire risk linked to the starter) dictates extreme caution when buying used. A model without a crystal-clear BMW dealership maintenance history should be avoided. If you opt for a diesel, the 30d is the most rational and reliable choice; the M50d, although fascinating, is a financial time bomb in the event of a failure of its quad-turbo system.
