BMW X6 E71 (2007–2014) (2007 – 2014)

Reliability score : 6.8/10

The first-generation BMW X6 (code name E71) invented the SAC (Sports Activity Coupé) segment. Based on the BMW X5 (E70) platform, it sacrifices some rear passenger space and trunk volume in favor of a sloping roofline and more dynamic road handling, aided by the standard Dynamic Performance Control system (torque vectoring rear differential). Facelifted (LCI) in spring 2012 (LED lights, minor aesthetic touches), it achieved immense commercial success despite its polarizing design. While gasoline engines (especially the V8) made its reputation across the Atlantic, it was diesel (M57 then N57 inline 6-cylinder) that dominated the European market. It is a heavy vehicle (over 2.1 tons) that puts enormous strain on its running gear and brakes.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X6 E71 is a beloved vehicle whose running costs should not be underestimated. If you are looking for a diesel, absolutely prioritize 2008-2010 models equipped with the M57 engine (30d 235hp or 35d 286hp): although older and equipped with the 6-speed gearbox, they are significantly more reliable than the next generation. If you opt for a post-2010 model (N57), demand proof of timing chain replacement or budget €2,000 to €3,000 for preventive replacement. Avoid the 50i (N63) gasoline V8, which is a financial black hole. In all cases, the purchase must be accompanied by a rigorous maintenance history, particularly concerning gearbox and transfer case oil changes.
