While the market is pushing towards plug-in hybrids (45e/50e), the 30d and 40d diesel versions (B57 engine) remain the most pragmatic and reliable choice for high-mileage drivers. This engine combines quiet power with surprisingly low consumption for a 2.2-ton vehicle. Mechanical reliability is excellent, provided that the EGR cooler recall has been performed and the golden rules of the xDrive system (4 identical and star-marked tires) are strictly followed. Avoid the M50d if you fear astronomical maintenance bills, and opt for a well-optioned 30d.
