BMW X5 G05 (2018 – 2025)

Reliability score : 8.5/10

The fourth-generation BMW X5 (G05) is based on the modular CLAR platform. Launched in late 2018, it marks a significant leap forward in terms of interior finish, comfort (air suspension optional or standard depending on versions), and onboard technologies compared to its predecessor (F15). It received a mid-cycle refresh (LCI) in spring 2023, introducing the large curved screen (BMW Curved Display) with iDrive 8/8.5, generalized mild hybridization (48V MHEV), and thoroughly revised PHEV and V8 powertrains. Overall, the G05 is considered one of the most accomplished and reliable premium SUVs in its segment, particularly when equipped with the renowned B58 inline 6-cylinder engine.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X5 G05 is undoubtedly the best SUV in its category at present. It has successfully corrected the finish defects of the previous generation while retaining BMW's characteristic driving dynamics. The top choice is the xDrive40i (B58), which offers almost irreproachable reliability and high-level driving pleasure. High-mileage drivers will find their happiness with the 30d, provided they ensure that the EGR recalls have been performed. The plug-in hybrid versions (45e/50e) are engineering masterpieces, but their complexity necessitates buying a model under warranty (or with an extension). Conversely, the M50d should be avoided as a used car with high mileage due to potentially ruinous repair costs. Rigorous maintenance (shortened oil change intervals, homogeneous tires) is the absolute key to this model's longevity.
