BMW X5 F15 (2013 – 2018)

Reliability score : 7.6/10

The third-generation BMW X5 (code name F15) replaces the E70, retaining its wheelbase but thoroughly modernizing the interior, onboard technologies, and aerodynamics. Although diesel engines (30d, 40d) dominated the European market, gasoline versions (35i, 50i) and the plug-in hybrid (40e) achieved strong success in North America, Asia, and certain European markets penalizing diesel. The F15 stands out for its supreme comfort, its ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox (a benchmark), and its highly developed iDrive infotainment system. In terms of reliability, while the 6-cylinder gasoline engines (N55) are robust, the V8s (N63TU) demand extreme vigilance and a substantial maintenance budget.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X5 F15 is a sophisticated luxury SUV that has corrected many of its predecessor's finish defects. For gasoline engines, the xDrive35i (N55) is the choice of both reason and passion: it offers an excellent compromise between performance, sound, and reliability, provided preventive maintenance (water pump, seals) is respected. The 50i's V8 is to be avoided unless you have an unlimited maintenance budget and a perfectly transparent service history. The 40e hybrid version is fiscally interesting, but its electric range has aged poorly, and the reliability of the N20 engine (before 2015) calls for caution. When purchasing, it is imperative to check the rear air suspension and the absence of water ingress in the trunk.
