BMW X3 F25 (2010 – 2017)

Reliability score : 6.8/10

The BMW X3 (F25) represents the second generation of the Bavarian compact/family SUV. Launched in late 2010 to replace the aging E83, it marked a spectacular leap forward in terms of comfort, finish, and onboard technology. Produced in Spartanburg (USA), it adopted the formidable ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and the new-generation iDrive multimedia system. A major facelift (LCI - Life Cycle Impulse) occurred in spring 2014, bringing aesthetic touches (headlights joining the grille) but, more importantly, a crucial overhaul of the diesel engines (transition from the problematic N47 to the much more reliable B47). Although very accomplished dynamically, the X3 F25 was marred by serious timing chain issues on its 4-cylinder engines (petrol and diesel) from before 2014/2015, as well as a high

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X3 F25 is an SUV with two faces. Phase 1 (2010-2014) models equipped with 4-cylinder engines (20d N47 and 20i/28i N20) are veritable ticking time bombs if they haven't been made reliable (timing chain). In contrast, LCI (post-2014) versions equipped with the B47 diesel, or 6-cylinder models (30d, 35d, 35i) throughout production, offer a high-flying premium experience. Buying advice: Avoid 18d/20d models from before 2014 without a timing chain replacement invoice. Prioritize a facelifted (LCI) 20d (B47) or a 30d (N57) model with a strict service history, gearbox (ZF and transfer) oil changes performed, and uniformly worn BMW star-marked tires.
