The first-generation BMW X3 (E83 code) inaugurated the premium compact SUV segment. Based on a platform derived from the 3 Series E46, it stands out with exceptionally dynamic road handling for a high-riding vehicle, at the expense of suspension comfort, deemed very firm. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system, prioritizing rear-wheel drive, offers excellent traction. Major evolutions : - 2003 : Launch with 6-cylinder petrol (M54) and diesel (M57) engines. - 2004/2005 : Introduction of 4-cylinder engines (2.0i and 2.0d). - Late 2006 (Model Year 2007) : Mid-cycle facelift (LCI - Life Cycle Impulse). Drastic improvement in interior plastic quality (heavily criticized on phase 1), new bumpers, LED taillights, and especially the introduction of new petrol engines (N52) and the 6-speed ZF automatic
The BMW X3 E83 is a purist's SUV: it sacrifices comfort on the altar of dynamism. As a used car, it's a vehicle with two faces. Versions equipped with the 6-cylinder petrol (M54 and N52) or 6-cylinder diesel (M57) engines are remarkably robust if peripheral maintenance is followed. However, the 4-cylinder diesels (especially the N47) and neglected models can turn into financial black holes (transfer case, GM automatic gearbox, panoramic roof). Buying advice : Target a facelifted model (LCI, after late 2006) for the best finish and the ZF6 gearbox. In petrol, the 3.0si (272 hp) is the pinnacle, but a phase 1 2.5i/3.0i (M54) with a manual gearbox is an excellent choice for a reliable "youngtimer". Avoid panoramic sunroofs and 2.0d N47 diesels without a clear timing chain history.
