BMW X1 F48 (2015 – 2022)

Reliability score : 8.6/10

The BMW X1 (F48) marks a historic break for the Bavarian brand: it abandons rear-wheel drive in favor of the UKL2 front-wheel drive platform (shared with MINI and the 2 Series Active Tourer). This change in architecture allowed for maximizing interior space and trunk volume, transforming the X1 into a very pragmatic family SUV. Mechanically, it introduced the 'B' family of modular engines (B38, B48 for gasoline; B37, B47 for diesel), which proved to be significantly more reliable than the previous generation (N20/N47). A facelift (LCI) occurred in mid-2019, bringing aesthetic touches, an infotainment update, and the introduction of the DKG7 dual-clutch gearbox on some gasoline versions. Overall, the F48 is a mature and very reliable vehicle, especially with gasoline engines.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X1 F48 is one of the most recommendable premium compact SUVs on the used car market, provided you choose the right engine. By abandoning the old N20/N47 engines for the modular 'B' generation, BMW drastically improved the reliability of its entry-level models. Gasoline versions (18i and especially 20i/25i/28i) are exceptionally robust and represent the best choice. The 2.0L 4-cylinder (B48) offers the perfect compromise between driving pleasure, performance, and reliability. Diesel versions should be avoided for low-mileage drivers due to chronic EGR cooler issues. A well-maintained gasoline model (with Aisin gearbox oil change performed) will take you very far without major problems.
