BMW X1 F48 (2015 – 2022)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The second-generation BMW X1 (code name F48) marks a major technological shift for the Bavarian brand. Abandoning the rear-wheel-drive architecture of its predecessor (E84) for the modular UKL2 platform (shared with MINI and the 2 Series Active Tourer), it switched to front-wheel drive (sDrive) or Haldex-type all-wheel drive (xDrive). While purists regretted the loss of typical BMW handling and inline 6-cylinder engines, this choice allowed for a spectacular leap in terms of interior space, trunk volume, and versatility. Facelifted (LCI) in 2019 with an enlarged grille, new bumpers, and a technological update, the F48 established itself as one of the best-selling premium SUVs worldwide. In terms of reliability, the modular 'B' series engines (B37/B47 for diesel, B38/B48 for gasoline) have

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X1 F48 is an excellent choice on the used car market. By abandoning rear-wheel drive, it has become a true family vehicle, spacious and practical, while retaining above-average dynamism for the segment. For diesels, the B47 engines (18d, 20d) are inherently very robust and have corrected the timing chain flaws of the past. However, the sword of Damocles of the EGR cooler demands absolute vigilance: only buy a diesel model if the BMW recall history is clear and documented. If you drive less than 20,000 km/year or do a lot of city driving, opt without hesitation for the excellent gasoline engines (18i or 20i), which are less prone to costly emissions system failures. Prioritize versions equipped with the 8-speed Aisin automatic gearbox and 'Advanced' seats for optimal comfort.
