The second-generation BMW X1 (codename F48) marks a historic turning point for the model. Abandoning the rear-wheel-drive architecture of its predecessor (E84), it adopts the modular UKL2 platform (shared with MINI and the 2 Series Active Tourer), thus switching to front-wheel drive (sDrive) or a Haldex-type all-wheel drive (xDrive) with transverse engines. This technical choice significantly optimized interior space and boot volume, correcting the main flaw of the previous generation. The F48 benefited from a facelift (LCI) in 2019, bringing aesthetic touches (enlarged grille, new LED lights), an iDrive system update, and the introduction of the plug-in hybrid powertrain (xDrive25e). Overall, the F48 is a very accomplished vehicle, benefiting from BMW's new modular engine family (B-series
The BMW X1 F48 is an excellent premium compact SUV. The switch to front-wheel drive saddened purists, but transformed the X1 into a remarkably practical family vehicle. In terms of reliability, it's a great vintage: the B38 and B48 petrol engines are among the most reliable in their category. The diesels are also very mechanically robust (the timing chain is no longer an issue), but their record is tarnished by the endless saga of EGR coolers. Buying advice: Prioritize a petrol model (sDrive18i or sDrive20i) post-2019 (LCI) to benefit from the best multimedia system and flawless reliability. If you opt for a diesel, demand proof that the EGR cooler recall has been recently performed at a BMW dealership. Avoid 19-inch wheels with Runflat tires if you value your spine.
