BMW X1 E84 (2009 – 2015)

Reliability score : 6.2/10

The BMW X1 (E84) is the first compact SUV from the Bavarian brand. Based on the proven 3 Series Touring (E91) platform, it offers dynamic road handling, closer to a raised estate car than a true off-roader. Launched in 2009, it underwent a facelift (LCI) in summer 2012, bringing an improved interior finish, slight aesthetic touches, and the excellent ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. Although very popular in Europe thanks to its economical and powerful diesel engines, its reputation has been tarnished by the timing chain issues of the infamous N47 engine. It remains an excellent choice for driving enthusiasts, provided you are extremely vigilant about the service history.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X1 E84 is a two-faced vehicle. Dynamically, it is undoubtedly the most enjoyable compact SUV of its generation to drive. However, its reliability record is heavily burdened by the N47 diesel engine and the fragility of the xDrive system. Buying advice: If you are looking for a diesel, absolutely prioritize a facelifted (LCI) model from after summer 2012, ideally paired with the ZF8 automatic gearbox. Demand invoices proving that the timing chain has been replaced, or negotiate the price to include this operation (approximately 1500 to 2500 €). Avoid xDrive models with mismatched tires. sDrive (rear-wheel drive) versions are less expensive to maintain and avoid transfer case issues. For maximum peace of mind, the rare 6-cylinder petrol versions (N52) are the most robust, although thirsty.
