BMW X1 E84 (2009 – 2015)

Reliability score : 5.8/10

The BMW X1 (E84) is the first compact SUV from the Bavarian brand. Based on the 3 Series Touring (E91) platform, it distinguishes itself from its successors by its longitudinal architecture favoring rear-wheel drive (sDrive) or rear-biased all-wheel drive (xDrive). This design gives it exceptional dynamic road handling for its category, akin to a raised wagon. Launched in 2009, it benefited from a facelift (LCI) in 2012, improving interior finish and introducing new engines. While its dynamic qualities are undeniable, its overall reliability is heavily impacted by timing chain issues on the 4-cylinder diesel (N47) and gasoline (N20) engines.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW X1 E84 is a paradoxical vehicle. In terms of driving, it is undoubtedly the most rewarding compact SUV of its generation thanks to its 3 Series DNA. However, as a used car, it represents a financial minefield due to the N47 (diesel) and N20 (gasoline) engines that equip 90% of the fleet. The purchase of a 4-cylinder should only be considered if the timing chain has been recently replaced with an invoice to prove it. For a worry-free purchase, prioritize the rare 6-cylinder gasoline versions (25i, 28i pre-2011), which are extremely reliable and melodious, albeit thirsty. Avoid xDrive models whose tires have not been changed in sets of four.
