The BMW 5 Series G60 (sedan) and G61 (Touring) represents the 8th generation of the famous Bavarian executive car. Based on the modular CLAR platform, it marks a historic turning point by simultaneously offering internal combustion engines (48V mild-hybrid), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and, for the first time, 100% electric versions under the i5 designation. Positioned against the Mercedes E-Class (W214) and Audi A6, the G60 grows considerably (exceeding 5 meters in length) and adopts a polarizing, more angular design. Inside, it integrates the BMW Curved Display with the iDrive 8.5 (then 9.0) system, eliminating almost all physical buttons. Overall initial reliability score: Although the model is very recent (lack of long-term perspective), it benefits from internal combustion engines (B48, B
The BMW 5 Series G60 is an impressive technological showcase that succeeds in the challenge of offering all powertrains on the same platform without compromising comfort or driving pleasure. In terms of mechanical reliability, it is a very safe purchase: the internal combustion engines (B48, B58, B47, B57) have reached full maturity and are among the best on the market. However, like any ultra-connected new-generation vehicle, the first year of production models (2023) suffered from early software bugs and a major recall for the braking system (IBS). Buying advice: Prefer a model produced after March 2024 to avoid electronic teething problems. The 520d and 540d versions remain the undisputed queens for high-mileage drivers. For pure driving pleasure, the 540i (outside Europe) is the top choice. The i5 eDrive40 is one of the best current electric sedans, provided you accept its size.
