The seventh-generation BMW 5 Series (G30 for the sedan, G31 for the Touring wagon, G38 for the long-wheelbase version in China) marks a major turning point in reliability compared to its predecessor (F10). Based on the modular CLAR platform, it lightens its chassis and incorporates modular engines (B48, B58, B47, B57 families) that have largely proven their worth. The mid-2020 facelift (LCI) generalized 48V mild-hybridization (MHEV) and updated the infotainment system (iDrive 7). Although this report focuses on the excellent petrol engines, the 5 Series G30/G31 remains a benchmark executive car, offering an exceptional compromise between comfort, dynamism, and build quality. Overall generation rating: Excellent.
The BMW 5 Series G30/G31 is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished and reliable executive cars of its generation, provided you choose the right engine. The petrol versions (520i, 530i, and especially 540i) are true benchmarks in reliability thanks to the B48 and B58 engines. They are highly recommended, with a special mention for the 540i which offers a masterful driving experience. The diesel versions remain excellent road devourers but require strict verification of EGR recalls and exclusively highway use to avoid clogging. The V8s (M550i, M5) are for an informed audience ready to bear exponential maintenance costs. For a used car, prioritize an LCI model (post-2020) to benefit from the latest technological updates and mild-hybridization.
