The sixth-generation BMW 5 Series (F10 for the sedan, F11 for the Touring wagon) marks a return to a more consensual and elegant design after the Bangle era (E60). Based on the 7 Series platform (F01), it makes a spectacular leap forward in terms of finish, sound insulation, and comfort, becoming a true 'mini 7 Series'. The introduction of the 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox (ZF8) is a major asset. The facelift (LCI - Life Cycle Impulse) in July 2013 subtly modernized the aesthetics but, more importantly, brought crucial mechanical corrections, notably the gradual replacement of the problematic N47 diesel engine with the much more reliable B47. Overall, it's an excellent road car, but its reliability drastically depends on the chosen engine and production year.
The BMW 5 Series F10/F11 is a car with two faces. It's an exceptional road car, comfortable and superbly finished, but it can turn into a financial nightmare if the wrong engine is chosen. Absolutely avoid the 550i (N63) and be extremely cautious with 520d models before 2014 (N47). The most rational and reliable diesel choice is a post-2014 520d (B47 engine) or a 530d (N57) with a perfect service history. For petrol, the 535i (N55) offers the best compromise between pleasure and reliability. The F11 wagon is magnificent but requires a budget for its rear suspension maintenance. A purchase that requires rigorous inspection and a clear history.
