The BMW 3 Series E90 (and its siblings: E91 Touring, E92 Coupe, E93 Convertible) is the fifth generation of BMW's benchmark compact executive car. Introduced in 2005, it represents a pivotal transition era for BMW, bridging the gap between traditional naturally aspirated, port-injected engines and the modern era of direct injection and turbocharging. Renowned for its exceptional 50:50 weight distribution, hydraulic power steering (on most models), and class-leading driving dynamics, the E90 remains a favorite among driving enthusiasts. The model received a significant LCI (Life Cycle Impulse / Facelift) in late 2008 (MY2009), which widened the track, updated the styling (LED taillights, revised bumpers), and introduced a new generation of engines and the updated iDrive system (CIC). The BMW E90 is a masterpiece of driving dynamics, but it is a minefield for the uninformed buyer. Your experience will depend entirely on the engine you choose. If you buy a well-maintained 325i/328i/330i with the N52 engine, or a 330d with the M57 engine, you are getting one of the best daily drivers of the 2000s. Just budget for standard BMW maintenance (water pumps, gaskets, suspension bushings). Conversely, if you buy a cheap 320d with the N47 engine or a neglected 335i with the N54 engine, it will likely become a financial nightmare. Avoid the 4-cylinder petrols and direct-injected non-turbo 6-cylinders (N43/N53) altogether. Replace the run-flat tires with standard rubber for a massive improvement in ride quality.
