The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (U06 generation), launched in early 2022, marks a technological and stylistic break from its predecessor (F45). Based on the FAAR platform (shared with the X1 U11), it abandons the manual gearbox and physical iDrive controller in favor of an all-touch interface (iDrive 8 with a curved display). Although it is a compact MPV (a declining segment), BMW has focused on dynamism and efficiency with widespread mild hybridization (48V MHEV) across the core petrol and diesel ranges, as well as plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions offering up to 90 km of electric range. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (U06) is an extremely accomplished vehicle mechanically. The petrol engines (218i, 220i, 223i) rely on B38/B48 blocks whose reliability is now well-proven and among the best in the premium market. The ideal choice is the 220i, which offers the best compromise between performance, consumption, and daily driving pleasure. The main pitfalls of this model are not mechanical, but electronic: iDrive 8 bugs (often resolved by updates) and the recent recall of the IBS braking system. If the targeted vehicle has a clear history and has undergone software corrections and manufacturer recalls, it is a highly recommendable purchase.
