The BMW 2 Series Coupé (G42), launched in late 2021, represents a welcome exception in the modern automotive landscape. Unlike the 1 Series (F40) or 2 Series Gran Coupé (F44) which switched to front-wheel drive (UKL platform), the G42 retains BMW's noble architecture: the CLAR platform, with a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive (or rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive). This technical choice gives it first-class dynamic behavior, although the weight is significantly higher compared to the previous generation (F22). The interior was updated in 2022/2023 with the integration of the large curved dual screen (iDrive 8). In terms of reliability, the G42 benefits from the exceptional maturity of the modular "B" series engines (B48, B58, B47), making this coupé one of the most reliable models
The BMW 2 Series Coupé (G42) is an excellent buy. In an era where the automotive industry is turning towards front-wheel drive, small hybrid engines, and all-electric, the G42 stands out as a modern dinosaur, in a good way. The reliability of the petrol engines (B48 and B58) is now well-proven and ranks among the best in the premium market. The 220i or 230i version will be more than sufficient for 90% of drivers thanks to a robust 2.0L block. For purists, the M240i with its B58 6-cylinder is a future collector's item, offering supercar performance with the reliability of a family sedan. Avoid the diesel (220d) unless you exclusively drive on highways.
