Unlike the 1 Series (F40) or 2 Series Gran Coupé (F44) which switched to front-wheel drive (UKL platform), the G42 retains BMW's noble architecture: the CLAR platform, with a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive (or rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive). This technical choice gives it first-class dynamic behavior, although the weight is significantly higher compared to the previous generation (F22). The interior was updated in 2022/2023 with the integration of the large curved dual screen (iDrive 8). The BMW 2 Series Coupé (G42) is an excellent buy. In an era where the automotive industry is turning towards front-wheel drive, small hybrid engines, and all-electric, the G42 stands out as a modern dinosaur, in a good way. The reliability of the petrol engines (B48 and B58) is now well-proven and ranks among the best in the premium market. The 220i or 230i version will be more than sufficient for 90% of drivers thanks to a robust 2.0L block. For purists, the M240i with its B58 6-cylinder is a future collector's item, offering supercar performance with the reliability of a family sedan. Avoid the diesel (220d) unless you exclusively drive on highways.
