BMW Série 2 F45/F46 Active/Gran Tourer (2014 – 2021)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45, 5-seater) and Gran Tourer (F46, 7-seater) represent a historic and controversial milestone for the Bavarian brand: they are BMW's first-ever front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles and first multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs). Built on the UKL2 platform shared with MINI, they prioritize interior space, practicality, and family-oriented versatility over traditional BMW rear-wheel-drive dynamics. Despite purist backlash, they were a commercial success. The model received a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI / facelift) in March 2018, introducing updated powertrains, a revised dual-clutch transmission for some petrol models, and refreshed styling. Overall, it is a premium, well-built family car with a strong engine lineup, particularly the highly efficient B47 diesel engines.

🎯 Verdict

The BMW 2 Series Active/Gran Tourer is an outstanding premium family car, provided you accept it for what it is: a practical MPV, not a sports car. For Diesel Buyers: The 218d (B47) is the absolute sweet spot of the range. It is punchy, incredibly frugal, and mechanically robust (the timing chain issues of the past are gone). However, you must ensure the EGR cooler recall has been performed. Avoid the diesels if your daily commute is less than 15 km in heavy traffic, as the DPF will clog. For City Dwellers: Opt for the 218i (post-2015 or automatic to avoid the thrust bearing issue) or the 225xe PHEV if you can charge at home. Overall, it is a highly recommended buy on the used market, offering better build quality than mainstream rivals and superior driving dynamics for an MPV.
