BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) & Gran Tourer (F46) Launched in 2014, the 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) marked a historic turning point for BMW: it was the brand's first MPV and its first front-wheel-drive model (based on the UKL2 platform shared with MINI). In 2015, the extended 7-seater version, the Gran Tourer (F46), joined the range. Despite criticism from purists, this model was a commercial success thanks to its premium finish, spaciousness, and surprisingly dynamic road handling for its category. A facelift (LCI) occurred in March 2018, bringing aesthetic updates, an engine update for Euro 6d-TEMP standards, and the introduction of a 7-speed DKG dual-clutch gearbox replacing the old 6-speed automatic gearbox on some versions. Expert's Verdict The BMW 2 Series Active/Gran Tourer is an excellent MPV that successfully combined family practicality with BMW's dynamic DNA. To buy: The 4-cylinder petrol versions (220i) are the most reliable. The 3-cylinder petrol (218i) is a good choice provided you aim for a model produced after 2016 to avoid early crankshaft issues. To negotiate / Imperatively check: The diesel versions (216d, 218d, 220d) are excellent long-distance vehicles, but the history of the EGR valve recall must be clear. If the vehicle has only been driven in the city, avoid the diesel. Warning: Regardless of the automatic gearbox model, mentally (and financially) prepare for the gear selector spring issue, a minor but very common fault. Prioritize facelifted models (LCI, post-2018) which benefit from better technological equipment and optimized running gear.
