BMW Série 1 F40 (2019 – 2024)

Reliability score : 8.6/10

The BMW 1 Series (F40 Generation) marks a historic break for the Bavarian manufacturer: the abandonment of rear-wheel drive and longitudinal engines in favor of a front-wheel drive architecture (UKL2 platform) with transverse engines. While purists grumbled, this choice significantly improved rear passenger space and trunk volume, thus correcting the main flaws of the previous generation (F20). In terms of reliability, the F40 benefits from the maturity of the modular B-series engines (B38, B48 for gasoline; B37, B47 for diesel), which have been largely made reliable since their introduction in 2014. The interior finish quality takes a leap forward, reaching or even surpassing that of its direct rivals (Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class). The iDrive 7.0 infotainment system is one of the most stabl

🎯 Verdict

The BMW 1 Series F40 is an excellent used car purchase choice, particularly in its gasoline versions. While it has lost its atypical rear-wheel drive architecture, it has gained in maturity, space, and especially reliability. The B38 (118i) and B48 (120i, 128ti) engines are among the most robust blocks in their current category. For daily use, the 118i represents the most rational and balanced choice. Dynamic driving enthusiasts will turn to the 128ti, an excellent front-wheel drive GTI. Simply avoid diesel versions if you primarily drive in the city to prevent classic clogging issues.
